What if your perception of reality isn’t exactly well.., accurate? What if the mirrors surrounding you in daily life, could give you a glimpse of small details or even feelings, you were missing?
In fact, sometimes Wrong Mirrors reflect people who are not in the room at all...
The Wrong Mirrors exhibition by Melusini Parkins at the Mimimun Gallery gives you that quick peek into the surreal. The mirrors in the empty rooms don’t quite reflect reality, at least that’s the second impression one gets while looking at the paintings by Melusina Perkin.
The clean white lines of the monochromatic paintings are the first immediate impact, but then you ponder on the subjects themselves that face away from you. Next, you notice that although for the most part, the reflections appear to be of the same people outside of the mirrors, they appear to be doing something completely different than what they are supposed to reflect. In fact, sometimes the mirrors reflect people who are not in the room at all. In some of her paintings, the mirrors jarringly show other people in the room with the subjects. This incongruence throws you off kilter, leaving you with a feeling of quiet discomfort.

What needs to be discussed is the fact that her work is based on AI-generated imagery, which for some is a mockery of art and artists in general. In my mind, this is fine as long as the artist begins with or adds to an original concept. Remember, AI-generated imagery is art generated by Artificial Intelligence using words alone.
